Police probing 13 youngsters for damaging wheelchairs at designated GE2025 polling stations

The police are investigating 13 young people over their alleged involvement in two cases of damage to government property, namely wheelchairs at designated general election polling stations.

Singapore goes to the polls on May 3, and wheelchairs are on site at polling stations for senior voters and those with special needs or physical disabilities.

In a statement on May 1, the police said the first incident occurred on April 28 at an open space near Block 51A Sengkang West Avenue that had been designated for use as a polling station.

The police were called at about 10.55pm, and officers at the scene found three wheelchairs belonging to the Elections Department (ELD) had been damaged.

Five people were suspected to have been involved in the incident, and preliminary investigations found they had allegedly used the wheelchairs to race one another. One of them also allegedly threw a wheelchair in the air.

The second case occurred on May 1 at Block 176B Boon Lay Drive, where a sheltered basketball court had been cordoned off for use as a polling station.

One wheelchair belonging to the ELD was damaged, and eight people suspected to be involved in the incident have been identified, the police said.

Those found guilty of vandalism may be fined up to $2,000 or jailed up to three years, or both. Offenders may also face between three and eight strokes of caning.

Police investigations are ongoing.
