Singapore High Court finds film distributor liable for copyright infringement in first case invoking Simplified Process for Certain IP Claims

This update gives a brief background and overview of the Singapore High Court decision in Tiger Pictures Entertainment Ltd v Encore Films Pte Ltd [2024] SGHC 39 which is the first case in Singapore invoking the “Simplified Process for Certain Intellectual Property Claims”, an optional “fast track” for intellectual property (“IP”) litigation to provide parties with a more affordable and expedited route to enforce their IP rights in Singapore.

High Court dismisses appeal by firm whose claim for $1.3m in refunds was denied by Iras

The Inland Revenue of Authority disallowed the claims in 2020 on the basis that there was no conclusive evidence of a supply of the goods, and that these were not genuine business transactions. It is the first time a case on the rejection of input tax has been brought before the court.
