Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore notes the merger has not resulted in a substantial lessening of competition within Singapore.

The Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCS) has cleared the completed acquisition of Singapore’s Advanced Micro Foundry (AMF) by New York-headquartered semiconductor company GlobalFoundries, it announced on Monday (Apr 13).

The decision comes about two months after the transaction was first notified to the competition watchdog on Feb 11.

Following an assessment, CCS concluded that the merger has not resulted in a substantial lessening of competition within the Singapore market.

The review specifically focused on the supply of foundry services for pluggable transceivers, a component in data communications and telecommunications infrastructure.

CCS determined that the two companies were not the closest competitors to one another in the specialised foundry space.

It also identified several other viable suppliers that customers can potentially switch to, and noted that the combined market share of the two entities is low.

The acquisition allows GlobalFoundries to integrate AMF’s specialised capabilities into its operations.

Advanced Micro Foundry specialises in silicon photonics, a technology that uses light instead of electricity to transmit data. This allows for faster and more energy-efficient data transmission, and it is increasingly being used in data centres due to its ability to better handle the demands of artificial intelligence applications.

This is GlobalFoundries’ second-largest acquisition of a Singapore-based semiconductor company.
